Overview
Square’s MCP connector lets an assistant discover and call Square APIs. Choose the hosted OAuth service or the local server according to your deployment needs.
Who it suits
Square merchants and integrators investigating catalog, inventory, order, or payment data who want API discovery and execution in one assistant connection.
Who it may not suit
A business whose operational data is outside Square, or a team expecting the connector to migrate its entire catalog from another commerce platform.
Seller use cases
- Find the catalog API method and schema needed to investigate a missing item before making the call.
- Read order and inventory information to explain a stock discrepancy at the affected location.
- Exercise a payment integration in Square sandbox with the environment explicitly configured.
What you can do
What you need
- A Square account and compatible MCP client; local mode needs an access token.

Hosted mode uses Square OAuth. Local mode runs Node and sends the configured access token to Square’s production or sandbox API.

Pricing at a glance
The local server is available from Square’s repository and the hosted endpoint uses Square authorization. The reviewed README does not set a separate MCP tariff; merchant services and the selected AI client retain their applicable charges.
Open sourceGood to know
The API discovery layer can expose broad operations. In local mode, DISALLOW_WRITES can restrict execution to reads; also verify sandbox versus production before testing any payment-related action.
Alternatives to Square MCP
PayPal AI Toolkit New
Consult PayPal integration references before changing checkout code
Any storePayPal AI Toolkit is oriented toward PayPal development and sandbox exercises rather than a Square merchant’s operating data.
Stripe AI New
Consult Stripe payment integration guidance inside a coding client
Any storeStripe AI is centered on Stripe billing and payment development; Square MCP also reaches Square commerce catalog and inventory resources.
Frequently asked questions
Should I choose hosted or local mode?
Square recommends its hosted OAuth server for most users. Local mode is useful when you need to run the server yourself and manage its access token and environment.
Can local mode be read-only?
The configuration documents DISALLOW_WRITES=true. Use it with suitable account permissions for an analysis session that should not change records.
Does knowing an API method mean I can call it?
The method schema describes the request. Execution still depends on authentication, account permissions, required parameters, and the configured Square environment.
How do I select a test environment?
The local server documents SANDBOX and PRODUCTION settings. Check those values together with the token before running an operation; a successful request to one environment does not validate the other.
